Missouri Quarter Horse Youth Association - January 2019 News
News Hello fellow MQHYA members! We have a lot of big events we need to cover – so, let’s get started!
First, on Saturday, January 19, we will be having the annual MQHA Convention and Awards Banquet at the Holiday Inn Executive Center in Columbia. We also have our annual Youth Meeting that day. At our meeting, we will elect 2019 officers and directors, discuss remaining Youth World Show and Congress NYATT qualifying shows, make plans for the Youth Excellence Seminar (Y.E.S.), determine fundraisers and fun activities for the year, and much more!
If you are interested in running for an officer or director position, please see the attached document detailing the responsibilities of each office. Remember, be sure to have a brief speech prepared for the position you are running for.
If you are planning to attend the convention, please remember to bring items for your donation to the silent auction. It can be any item you desire - something for your horse, western home décor, clothing, sports-related items, make-up, gift cards - use your imagination and try to come up with something unique. Anything you can bring is greatly appreciated! This has been a huge fundraiser for us in the past and it is up to you, our members to make this successful.
A new fundraiser we will kick off at the convention is MQHA apparel sales. Our officer and director team had a conference call last weekend to discuss this fundraising opportunity. We have ordered MQHA apparel – t-shirts, long sleeve t’s and pullovers to sell as a fundraiser. We will have a table next to registration at the MQHA Convention to sell these items.
Also, this year’s theme for the banquet is Margaritaville – MQHA leadership encourages everyone to dress for the occasion! We will also have a couple of tables reserved for youth officers, directors, and members who wish to sit together during dinner and the entertainment.
If you are interested in attending Y.E.S. this year, the dates are July 9-11 in Amarillo, Texas. For more information about this fun event, visit AQHA.com/youth and find the YES tab. If you have interest in attending or being a delegate for Missouri, please be able to let us know at our meeting in a couple weeks, as that is when plans will begin to formulate with chaperones and hotel rooms. This year’s event is going to feature lots of new and exciting speakers as well as at a new hotel!
Don’t forget, at the MQHA Winter Blast Horse Show in February, we will be holding a horse judging clinic and contest once again. Be sure to sign up if this is of interest to you!
Lastly, if you have not done so already, but sure to complete your 2019 MQHYA membership so you will continue to receive the newsletter and important updates and information. You can find the membership form on the MQHA website – www.moqha.com
I hope to see all of you next week at our annual meeting. Until then, stay safe (and warm) and enjoy the New Year!

Have you made your decision on which position you would like to run for at the MQHA Convention? Here is how it works. First, please take a close look at the officer and director positions below and the descriptions of what each is responsible for. the convention, on Saturday morning there is a youth meeting. You will need to mention to another youth member or our youth advisor, what office you would like to run for, as someone will need to nominate you for that position. You will be asked to give a short speech (3-5 minutes), the voting will take place and the new officer and director board will be announced! None of the positions are overly time consuming. It also looks great on your future resume!

These members will contact local regional open show circuits and 4-H/FFA groups regarding the benefits of becoming MQHYA members. Directors will also work together to bring more fun to our weekend horseshows! Directors may decide to develop a schedule of fun classes to be held at each show. Together, directors would need to plan the event, from start to finish. This includes contacting and getting approval from the show managers. Directors would design flyers for each show to be included in the monthly email. Directors could reach out to members and ask them to help with making signs to be put up at the show. Remember, you would need to give plenty of notice to those individuals to make sure they have time to make the posters!
The Directors at Large, along with the Executive Director – Membership Chair will need to come up with a list of perks that you receive as a member. Directors at Large are responsible for getting to know all the youth at our shows. Try to introduce yourselves to anyone new. We want everyone to feel like they are a part of our organization!
