MQHA Member Spotlight: Karen Kay Martin

Name:  Karen Kay Martin

Where are you from?  Galesburg, IL

How long have you been showing horses?  I have been showing horses for 4 Years (2018-Current) since I first laid eyes on a beautiful mare named Baby, who I couldn't get out of my mind and heart.

What is your favorite horse show?  My Favorite Horse Show has always been the All-American Quarter Horse Congress. The horses, puppies, food, shopping, and atmosphere! It’s a Horse Lovers Heaven! Did I mention Shopping? LOL

Tell us about your family.   My husband Mike and I have two children. Shelby my daughter owns 49th Fathom Charters, a fishing/whale watching business which has been awarded the best of Juneau four consecutive years. My son Kholby owns a mowing /snowplowing business. He is a meteorologist with a passion to chase tornados. He's always willing to share that passion if he has any takers. Needless to say, I will stick to horses! LOL

How did you get hooked on horses?  As a child I asked my Dad for a pony. Some time passed and he brought home a pony with a colt, and she was in foal with a filly. Then history repeated itself with again a Mare, colt and foal which was a filly. That filly, April Ann, I had all her life, she was 40. The vet said she had a heart that was like a young horse, but her legs eventually gave out.

What is it about horses that makes you want to work with them and compete?  Well as far as horses and any animal goes, they are family. They are treated with love and respect. The competition part came later in life. It was time for some “me” time. To be around people who shared that passion for horses. Let me make note there are so many wonderful people I have met through these four years of showing. I've learned a lot and have a lot to learn. There are so many people who are always willing to help or give you advice. My thoughts are if you don't ask you don't receive. So, to those who have helped or guided me along the way I thank you from the bottom of my heart!

What would you tell your younger self (in relation to showing)?  In relation to showing start young if it’s possible. If not, it's never too late.

What horse(s) and event(s) are you currently showing?  I just retired my horse A VooDoo Doll. Unsure where I go from here maybe breed her or buy one to show. Or just be thankful and reflect on the memories of showing a mare named "Baby" who never disappointed me and gave me everything she had. Even a shake with her leg!

What are your goals?  Right now, my goals are laying low. Sometimes it’s just good to take a breath and hug a horse because it makes you feel so good!

Who do you look up to in the industry?  Who do I look up to in the Industry? Well so many people! I value many. Without mentioning a bunch of people my dear friends Jim Steinman and Linda Sands.

Do you have any superstitions when you show?  No superstitions but I whisper to Baby before, during and after I show her. The connection between horse and owner is important. Let them know you care and appreciate all they've done for you.

Who is your all-time favorite horse? And why?  Secretariat, growing up I always watched the Kentucky Derby.

If you are not at a horse show, what would we find you doing?  I would be spending time with my animals (another horse, a dog, a cat and 2 birds), family or taking care of our business.

One piece of advice you would like to share with exhibitors who are just getting started.   Try it, you'll love it! It doesn't matter if you have the best horse or if you win. Give it your all to the best of YOUR ability. Remember there is someone always willing to help. Just ask and you shall receive! Good Luck!

If there is anything else, you would like to share?  Please tell us!  Hug a horse, it makes you feel so good!!
